Duo Holz

Together, Aysel Taghi-Zada (violin and viola) and Michael Murphy (percussion and shō) are Duo Holz. Marking their debut with the inauguration of the previous Yamaha Recital Hall in 2017, the duo is dedicated to the performance of music from the late 20th Century on and the commissioning and programming of works by new generation Canadian composers.

In 2018 they were invited to perform in the Music Gallery’s Emergents series. Working with the Canadian Music Centre in 2019, Duo Holz held a two-day residency making up two concerts and a workshop for composers. Their first concert featured work of Toronto-based composer Linda Catlin Smith, an afternoon workshop the next day, and a concert with premieres of works by Tyler Versluis, Sophie Dupuis and Louis Pino. In the middle of lockdowns 2020 and 2021, they recorded a short concert with the new thirty-minute work by Toronto-based composer Paolo Griffin, "Alone, Together", and recorded Air-ré by Philippe Leroux for the temporarily digital 21C Festival in Koerner Hall.

The duo continues their pursuit of new Canadian works in their commissioning series in the 2022-23 season with new works by composers Liam Ritz and Michelle Lorimer.
